How to Obtain a Civil Union License in New Jersey

Applications for New Jersey civil union licenses must be obtained in the Municipal Registrar’s Office in the municipality where either the partner resides. If both partners are from out of state, they may apply at the Municipal Registrar’s Office in the municipality where the ceremony will take place.
Both partners and one witness who is 18 years of age or older and knows the couple must appear at the Municipal Registrar’s Office. Some municipalities will require proof of residency such as a driver’s license, lease or tax return.
It is recommended that you apply at least two weeks before the ceremony. You may apply as early as 6 months prior to the ceremony. You must apply at least 72 hours prior to issuance of the marriage license. The civil union license is valid for 30 days from the date of issuance.
